Mission Statement

The department’s mission is to advance and impart knowledge encompassing a range of personal disciplines in physical, intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual health. Our goal is to improve the quality of life through an acquisition of knowledge based on the potential of human movement in stimulating critical thought, artistic creativity, professional competence and responsible citizenship.

Outcomes
  1. Exercise and Sport Science students will develop physical competency and cognitive understanding with respect to at least 70% of the sport skills offered by the department as listed in the University Catalog.
  2. Exercise and Sport Science students will demonstrate mastery of physical fitness components.
  3. Exercise and Sport Science students will understand the importance of mind, body, and spirit in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and be able to impart this knowledge and understanding through their teaching and coaching.
  4. Exercise and Sport Science students will demonstrate their abilities regarding course content, lesson planning, hands-on teaching and coaching, classroom management, liability, adaptive populations and parent, teacher, and community relation.
  5. Exercise and Sport Science students will demonstrate a sound foundational knowledge and understanding of the principles of Anatomy, Physiology, Motor Learning, Kinesiology, and Nutrition as they relate to responses and adaptations to physical activity and exercise.
  6. Exercise and Sport Science students will demonstrate basic laboratory skills pertaining to assessments, laboratory methods, sound experimental and analytical practices, data collection, and reporting in the broad area of Exercise Science.
  7. Exercise and Sport Science students will understand the importance and influence of physical activity and exercise on the human body. Consequently, they will become advocates of physically active lifestyles as a means to improve quality of life and reduce the risk and prevalence of related lifestyles associated diseases.
  8. Exercise and Sport Science students will be able to determine the health-related needs of individuals, families and communities.
  9. Exercise and Sport Science students will be able to design and implement health promotion/disease prevention programs that are scientifically accurate as well as age, gender, ethnicity and socio-economically appropriate.
  10. Exercise and Sport Science students will be able to conduct and evaluate health education programs.
  11. Exercise and Sport Science students will gain work experience in their field of choice through a faculty approved internship.
  12. Exercise and Sport Science students will understand and incorporate the "Scientific Method" in problem solving. (See www.ScientificMethod.com)
  13. Exercise and Sport Science students will develop administration and managerial skills appropriate to becoming effective leaders in their families, profession, community and society.
  14. Exercise and Sport Science students will understand the principles of safety, prevention, emergence care and rehabilitation of injuries. They will also be skilled in practical application when appropriate.
